Affirming good behaviour in employees boosts their morale

This post came out from The Straits Times (3 October 2015)
Title - Show your appreciation

Some pointers that I've got are:
1. Always engage people in positive thoughts
2. Re-direct the performance of underachieving employees
3. Change your mindset

On Always engage people in positive thoughts

  • As a leader, you are the bastion of hope and aspiration. You need to keep a positive outlook so that people who report to you can use you as their guide to help them achieve their peak performance.
  • To do so, converse with your staff regularly and try to comment on their positive performance and how much you appreciate them for it. When you do this constantly, your staff will start to see you as someone who is genuinely interested in their welfare and productive behaviour, and they will continue to act accordingly.
On Re-direct the performance of underachieving employees
  • It is your unwritten role to help these underachievers redirect their actions to a more productive mode. There will be a natural tendency for you to criticise their behaviour and actions. But such criticism does not in any way help to improve the situation. Rather, it may create more tension and add stress to the situation, which might send the employee's performance into a downward spiral.
  • If you keep this up, your employee will lose all the trust and faith they have in you and may simply stop functioning effectively.
On Change your mindset
  • As a leader, you have to change your mindset of how you want to treat your people, who are looking up to you for guidance.
  • If you constantly conduct an appreciative inquiry on how your employees are performing, and your instructions are always intended to help them overcome their limitations and perform at their peak, they will start doing the same to others who are reporting to them.
  • This will create a domino effect and result in a positive work environment.
