The art of success

This post came out from The Straits Times (6 July 2015)
Title - The art of success

Some pointers that I've got are:
1. Have a vision
2. Tap on your hidden potential
3. Plan step by step
4. Be focused
5. Strive to do things your way
6. Don't let stress get to you
7. Respect others
8. Don't get caught in a rut

On Have a vision

  • Having a vision sets up the objectives that you wish to achieve, helping you cope with problems and gain greater satisfaction.
  • As you work towards your goal, do not disregard the present. Life is a journey, so pa y heed to what is happening in the present moment as well, and enjoy the little things. Life can be rewarding this way.
On Tap on your hidden potential
  • What do you like to do? What can you do well? What abilities do you have? Stop to think about whether you are using your energy and intelligence to their fullest capacities.
  • Work with what you have. A greater awareness of your hidden abilities, coupled with positive behaviour, determines your sense of self. This empowers you to achieve your goals and happiness.
On Plan step by step
  • Taking step by step actions enables you to focus on what is missing. Keep score and review your results to reflect on how you can continue towards your goal.
On Be focused
  • When preparing for a task, process the facts as best as you can to get a better idea of how to approach the task. Take criticism as valuable information for improvement. Making the most of your resources will build your confidence and satisfaction when completing the task.
On Strive to do things your way
  • Seek solving methods that is most fitting with your personality and lifestyle. This approach places the responsibility of action on yourself, instead of doing what others tell you. This way, you will be more likely to succeed in your task.
On Don't let stress get to you
  • Crises have a tendency to make people react impulsively. However, by being objective and steering away from factors that may influence your thought processes, you will be able to respond to crises more intelligently.
  • Adopt a clear-headed, scientific way of looking at problems broadens the opportunities of improvement, and may result in more or even better solutions to resolving the issue at hand.
On Respect others
  • Treat others the way you wish to be treated. If you want to be respected, you must respect others as well. Everyone wants to have their self-worth affirmed and feel like they count for something.
On Don't get caught in a rut
  • Be mindful of how you get caught in "mind traps", and learn to let go of fixed ways of thinking. Becoming more open-minded, discovering new ways of thinking and putting these new ideas into action will help you see the world in a new light.

Yours,
Something Small Thinking Big
