Some pointers that I've got are:
1. Watch and observe
2. Communicate the right way
3. Act with integrity
On Watch and observe
- Need to understand his or her psychological make-up. Observe your boss's working style, and be very clear about what is expected of you.
- Take careful note of what pleases, or catches his or her attention at the workplace, as well as his or her insecurities.
- When you start to adopt a pro-active approach in becoming a team player who adds value in the organization, it will certainly get the attention of the boss.
On Communicate the right way
- Be sure to understand what makes the boss insecure and how to address it, so that he or her will feel comfortable with you and as a result, induct you into his or her inner circle.
- Be very careful with the words and gestures that you use with your boss. Never let your boss get the slightest feeling that you are outshining him or her in any meeting or presentation. Always keep your vanity under check, especially when you are employing your charm and grace in presentations where your boss is present.
- Show your talent by all means, but remember to give due credit to your boss. If you can, acknowledge your boss's effort and contributions. It would not hurt to flatter your boss mildly from time to time to prevent any unnecessary feelings of insecurity.
On Act with integrity
- Establish a good reputation by saying what you mean and meaning what you say. Always strive to be seen as dependable by your boss, and reliable by your team. Whenever possible, try to deliver more than you promise.
- Protect your reputation. Never get angry or defensive when you are attached in a meting or presentation, especially when your boss is around.
- Instead, try to remain confident, and use your reputation, charm and grace to your advantage. Getting angry or defensive will only go to show that you are insecure about your reputation.
